Tempe is located in the Southeastern portion of Valley and is host to Arizona State University, the country's second largest. It is a college town that is generally about half rental property and the Valley's earliest experimenter with condominiums. It was founded in 1865 combining the settlements of Hayden's Ferry and San Pablo on respective banks of the Salt River.
